During the month of October, students at Boyle Road Elementary School, along with librarian Ms. Taormina and Principal Mrs. Sooknanan, decided to participate in this year's “Pink out the Pumpkins”, in partnership with Mather Hospital. They worked together in efforts to raise breast cancer awareness within the Comsewogue Community. The experience was surely one to remember and after a divided and confusing year, it was a meaningful way to bring the students, administrators, and community together.  “It brought back unity and a sense of community again. It was a school-wide contest, after class every student got to participate, which was awesome. So, it brought back that feeling of togetherness and community spirit,” says Ms. Taormina, Boyle Road librarian and event coordinator. And the students agreed!

After each student council member took a walk down to our local Four Corners Produce with Ms. Taormina, they were able to pick the 17 pumpkins that were to be decorated by each class. Students were then able to vote on their favorite pumpkins which were proudly displayed in the main lobby. “I like how I got to participate because I got to share my ideas and it was nice to see how different everyone’s opinions were. I also liked hanging out with my teacher and seeing her ideas,” says fifth grade student council member, Ava.

Ms. Hart from Mather Hospital kindly donated various supplies such as pink and white shoe laces, tattoos, pins, lights and nylon banners for Boyle’s pink day on Wednesday October 27th. Her generosity made this experience so much more memorable.  “We pinked out our pumpkins, and we displayed them in our main lobby display along with merchandise that Mather Hospital sent us. We had 17 pumpkins, one representing each class,” says Ms. Taormina.

When asked if this would become an annual event, Ms. Taormina was excited to reply with a yes, “It was such a fun activity and there was so much positive feedback so we are going to make this an annual contest tradition,” she says.

“Everyone truly is a winner for raising awareness for breast cancer research.” — Ms. Taormina
